Course Description

The Essential Communication course provides a comprehensive foundation in effective workplace communication, encompassing principles of clarity and conciseness in both written and verbal interactions. Participants will gain proficiency in developing clear and purpose-specific work documents, adapting their communication style to diverse contexts, and constructing concise oral reports. Throughout the course, learners will engage in hands-on activities, including analyzing real-world business writing contexts, implementing reporting policies, and acquiring digital proficiency in communication software tools to ensure they are well-prepared for professional success in a digital era. 

Learning Outcomes/Course Goals/Objectives 

1. Demonstrate Workplace Communication Skills: 

  • Understand the principles of clarity and conciseness in both verbal and written communication.
  • Develop and refine short documents, messages, emails, ensuring they are clear and concise.
  • Analyze business writing contexts based on audience, purpose, and situation.
  • Produce purpose-specific business writings tailored to the intended audience.
  • Adapt tone and style to suit various contexts and ensure effective communication.
  • Apply effective communication techniques in diverse professional and personal settings.
  • Construct and deliver concise, organized oral reports for varied audiences and objectives.
2. Documentation and Reporting Techniques: 
  • Efficiently interpret, scan, and complete relevant workplace documents.
  • Implement reporting policies for hazards, injuries, and environmental impacts.
  • Recognize the steps involved in job hazard analysis.
  • Understand the devices and methods for reporting workplace risks and incidents.
  • Identify potential hazards and utilize risk assessment techniques.

3. Communication Technologies and Digital Proficiency: 

  • Identify and apply various modes of communication in a digital era.
  • Utilize communication technology appropriately and effectively in professional settings.
  • Achieve proficiency in using communication software tools.

Instructional Strategies/Learning Activities

This course is facilitated in-person by an instructor. Learning material (lesson readings, journal responses, learning tasks, quizzes etc.) are to be completed in-class, but may require some home-work time to reinforce learning. In Essential Communication, there are three chapters consisting of different lesson topics. To understand what lessons will be completed and when, the class schedule should be reviewed. Students should not read-ahead without the instructor’s approval.
