Welcome to the leadership fundamentals for managers. You are taking important step towards becoming a more effective leader in your managerial role.

What is this course all about?

The “Leadership Fundamentals for Managers” course equips participants with the ability to recognize and apply effective strategies for managing day-to-day operations and fostering positive relationships within an organization. By exploring Indigenous knowledge on leadership, learners gain a deeper understanding of diverse leadership perspectives and approaches, fostering inclusivity and cultural sensitivity. Moreover, the course encourages individuals to embrace a growth mindset by evaluating their current leadership practices and actively seeking constructive feedback to continuously improve their leadership skills.

This course is divided into five lessons that focus on key leadership skills and emphasizes the approaches and methodologies that can benefit working with all levels of the community and your workplace. There is also a Capstone assignment that pulls together all of your learning over the five lessons into a key presentation or take away.

Additionally, the Leadership Fundamentals course cultivates the ability to apply the principles of effective communication, delegation, and conflict resolution, enabling participants to effectively navigate day-to-day challenges and build strong, collaborative relationships within their teams.

Course Objectives
  1. Discuss what traits you understand about yourself in this moment.
  2. Share Indigenous knowledge on leadership and define qualities of a leader.
  3. Explain the influence that history and preceding leaders play in your role as a leader in your community.
  4. Listen to and discuss Indigenous wisdom on becoming a strong and influential leader.
  5. Discuss your Enneagram type and how this information may be useful as a leader to know.
  6. Explain the importance of understanding your community and organization as a leader.
  7. Discuss the community you will serve a as a leader in your management position.
  8. Describe how understanding the organization affects teamwork.
  9. Describe a change management model and how it can be used for implementing organizational change.
  10. Describe how to build rapport in relationships.
  11. Discuss current strengths and opportunities for development in building relationships as a manager.
  12. Describe techniques for improving interpersonal skills and relationship building (relationship management activities).
  13. Discuss the value of diversity across the team.
  14. Describe why creating a vision as a leader is important for purpose and direction.
  15. Discuss visions you have for your community at this moment.
  16. Explain how visions are shared with your team.
  17. Discuss how visions express the unique qualities and cultures of your team.
  18. List the 5 management tools that leaders use to manage day to day relationships and operations of the team.
  19. Explain the following tools: coaching, delegating, planning goal setting and motivation employees.

“Mapping My Journey” is a reflective cumulative exercise where you’ll craft a detailed document charting your experiences throughout this course. Beginning with your initial expectations, you’ll move through significant learning moments, discuss challenges, draw personal connections, and envision future applications of the knowledge gained.

This isn’t just about recounting experiences; it’s about deep introspection, connecting with the course content, and pinpointing areas of personal growth. Your submission will also offer feedback on the course structure and delivery, playing a role in its refinement for future cohorts. This task serves as both a showcase of your learning journey and an exploration into how this course has influenced your perspectives. Dive deep, and happy reflecting!
